How to hire a full stack developer for an enterprise roadmap

A briefing and interview guide for product and engineering leaders hiring full stack ownership—not a collection of specialists.

Enterprise roadmaps punish fragmented hiring

A large roadmap split across a frontend-only hire, a backend-only hire, and a “DevOps ticket” often stalls on interfaces. A full stack developer who owns a vertical slice reduces that tax—especially for mid-market teams that cannot staff every specialty yet.

Write the hire as an outcome

  1. The business workflow that must work in 90 days.
  2. Systems touched: CRM, billing, identity, data warehouse.
  3. Non-negotiables: security, uptime, audit, accessibility.
  4. Who reviews PRs and who accepts “done.”

Interview for ownership, not trivia

  • Ask them to sketch tenancy and permissions for your product.
  • Ask how they would ship a feature behind a flag with rollback.
  • Ask what they would refuse to build in v1—and why.
  • Give a messy brief; see if they tighten it instead of coding blindly.
Trivia quizzes hire people who study interviews. Product problems hire people who ship.

Stack questions that matter

React.js / Next.js for product UI and SEO surfaces; NestJS / Node or Python for APIs; cloud + CI/CD for release. Mobile via React Native only when the roadmap truly needs apps. See React.js vs Next.js if marketing pages must rank.
